Choosing a roof type comes down to your home’s design, slope, budget and how long you plan to stay. Here’s a plain comparison for Southern California homes.
Asphalt shingle
- Usually the most affordable option
- Works on moderate to steep slopes
- Many styles and colors, including cool-rated and Class A options
- Shorter lifespan than tile
Clay or concrete tile
- Classic look for Spanish and Mediterranean homes
- Very long-lasting tile, though underlayment needs replacing over time
- Heavier, so the structure must support it
- Higher upfront cost
Flat / low-slope
- Required for flat or nearly flat roofs, where shingles and tile can’t be used
- Torch-down and other membranes are common
- Drainage design is critical
How to decide
Your roof’s slope narrows the choices first. Then it’s about look, budget, HOA rules and fire-zone requirements. We’ll walk you through the options during a free estimate.
Roof types we install
We install all three: architectural and designer shingles like Presidential, clay and concrete tile, and torch-down and other flat-roof systems. Many homes in the Valley use more than one, such as a tile main roof with a flat section over an addition, and the transitions between them need careful flashing.
