Roofing quotes often mention two different warranties. Knowing the difference helps you compare quotes fairly.
Manufacturer warranty vs. labor warranty
The manufacturer’s warranty covers defects in the materials themselves. A labor (or workmanship) warranty covers mistakes in how the roof was installed, which is where most problems come from.
What our labor warranty covers
Every shingle and tile roof we install comes with a 15-year labor warranty. It covers problems caused by how the roof was installed, such as leaks from installation defects. Ask us for the written warranty terms with your estimate.
Questions to ask any roofer
- How many years does the labor warranty last?
- Is it in writing?
- Does it transfer if you sell the house?
- What isn’t covered?
Why it matters
Many contractors offer far shorter labor warranties. A longer one is only worth something if the company stands behind it, so check reviews and licensing too.
Get the warranty in writing
Whoever you hire, ask for the labor warranty in writing before work starts, along with the manufacturer’s warranty registration after the job. Keep both with your home records. If you sell the house, ask whether the warranty transfers to the buyer.
